The film chronicles the descent into hell of a junkie-turned-robber to get money for drugs. A haunting vision of contemporary America, this is the second feature by Gus Van Sant (Elephant). William Burroughs makes a cameo, endorsing this young filmmaker, who carries on the legacy of the American counterculture. The film kickstarted the career of teen idol Matt Dillon in his first adult role.

The film features some scenes that may trigger the sensibilities of the audience.

Born in 1952

Gus Van Sant is one of America's most acclaimed filmmakers. After his debut as an independent filmmaker with such films as Drugstore Cowboy (1990, starring Matt Dillon) and My Own Private Idaho (1991, starring Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix), he went on to make Hollywood movies including To Die For (1995, starring Nicole Kidman) and Good Will Hunting (1997), which catapulted Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to Oscar-winning stardom. He won the Palme d'Or in 2003 for his film Elephant. He also helmed Last Days, about Kurt Cobain’s final days. His career took a new turn in 2008 with Milk, a highly personal film that won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing.
